The Essential Nice & French Riviera Guide

Nice is one of those rare places I find myself returning to again and again. For me, it embodies everything I’ve grown to love about the Mediterranean – a perfect blend of vibrant culture, beautiful architecture, laid-back charm, and that unmistakable sun-drenched beauty that makes you instantly slow down and breathe a little deeper.

With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, the weather alone makes it worth the trip. I love those long, meandering walks along the Promenade des Anglais, the scent of salt in the air, or ducking into one of the many local markets bursting with color, fresh produce, and the rhythm of daily local life.

Despite its fame as the pearl of the French Riviera, Nice never feels like it’s performing for the crowds. It’s real. Locals gather for their morning coffee in sidewalk cafés, debate politics or football in shady squares, and carry on life with a warmth and humor that feels completely unforced. It’s that unpolished, everyday charm that keeps me coming back.

What makes Nice even more special is what surrounds it. The city sits cradled between the sea and the hills, which means that in the morning I can hike up Mont Boron or one of the many trails above the city for sweeping views of the coast, and in the afternoon be back down by the sea for a sunset aperitif. Within a short drive or train ride, I can escape to tiny hilltop villages like Èze, Peillon or Saint-Paul-de-Vence – places where tranquility can be found in every alleyway and stone arch.

In winter, Nice becomes something of a unicorn: where else can you go skiing in the Alps and sailing in the Mediterranean on the very same day? That contrast – snow-capped mountains and shimmering coastline – is part of the magic.

And getting there? Couldn’t be easier. Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) is practically next door, and thanks to the modern tram that glides right into the heart of the city, I’m checked in and sipping a glass of wine in the old town within minutes of landing.

These are just some of the reasons why Nice keeps drawing me back – again and again. Each visit brings new discoveries, new corners to explore, and new reasons to fall in love all over again.
