The severe turbulence happened onboard Lufthansa flight 469 about 90 minute after takeoff from Austin. The aircraft was bound for Frankfurt but made emergency landing at Dulles, Metropolitan Washington Airport.

Seven people and a dog were rushed to hospital because of their injuries. At this stage it’s unknown their condition.

The statement from Lufthansa
“This was so-called clear air turbulence, which can occur without visible weather phenomena or advance warning,” the statement reads.

“The affected passengers were given initial care on board by the flight attendants trained for such cases. As the safety and well-being of passengers and crew members is the top priority at all times, the cockpit crew decided to make an alternate landing to (Dulles airport) after flying through the turbulence.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is now investigating the incident.

“Lufthansa Flight 469 diverted to Dulles International Airport and landed without incident around 9.10pm local time after the crew reported encountering severe turbulence at 37,000 feet altitude over Tennessee,” the FAA said.
