Meet Leaf, the Morelet’s tree frog at Frontiers plane tail

Found in Central America’s stunning landscapes, Leaf hops through Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. Sadly, habitat destruction and disease have pushed this species to critically endangered status. Also known as the black-eyed leaf frog or popeye hyla, this unique amphibian is a jewel of biodiversity in Central America. However, the Morelet’s tree frog faces a dire threat: Chytridiomycosis, a devastating disease wreaking havoc on amphibian populations worldwide. This infectious disease, coupled with habitat destruction, puts the Morelet’s tree frog at risk of an alarming decline of over 80% within the next decade. It is now classified as Critically Endangered in the wild. With its lime-green body, jet-black eyes, and vibrant orange underbelly, the Morelet’s tree frog is a sight to behold. Frontier is dedicated to bringing awareness to the endangered animals within the continental U.S.A. You can learn more about our endangered animal tails here.
