Japan Airlines’s first female president started off as Cabin Crew

Mitsuko Tottori, Japan Airlines’ new President initially joined the airline in 1985, and has successfully climb the corporate ladder since.

Japan Airlines (JAL) has unveiled a restructuring of its executive team, appointing Mitsuko Tottori as the incoming President, marking a historic milestone as the airline’s first female president since its establishment. Tottori’s journey with the company began in 1985 as a cabin crew member, and over the years, she has ascended through the organizational ranks, undertaking various managerial roles.

As detailed in Tottori’s biography, as provided by the airline in its official statement, her tenure with the company commenced in April 1985 in the role of a flight attendant. Progressing through various roles, she transitioned into a managerial position in October 2005, assuming the role of Manager of the 1st Cabin Attendant Department.

Subsequent advancements occurred in May 2013 when she took on the responsibilities of Senior Manager of the Cabin Safety Department, followed by her appointment as the Senior Director of the 2nd Office Cabin Crew Affairs of the Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) 1st Cabin Attendant Department two years later.

A year thereafter, Tottori ascended to the position of Vice President of the NRT 2nd Cabin Attendant Department, later transitioning to Vice President of the Cabin Safety Department in April 2019. In the following year, she undertook the role of Executive Officer and Senior Vice President of Cabin Attendants at Japan Airlines.

By April 2022, her biography expanded to encompass positions such as Managing Executive Officer, Senior Vice President, and Senior Managing Executive Officer of Cabin Attendants before assuming the role of Senior Vice President of Customer Experience in charge of Brand Communication. A year later, she took on the roles of representative director and Senior Managing Executive Officer at JAL.

Finally, in June 2023, she assumed the dual roles of Senior Vice President of Customer Experience and Chief Customer Officer at Japan Airlines, maintaining these positions until her recent promotion to the presidency. Presently, Tottori continues to hold the positions of Senior Vice President of Customer Experience and Chief Customer Officer at Japan Airlines.

” There are female employees out there who are struggling with their career steps or going through big life events,” Tottori told a news conference.

” I hope my appointment as a president can encourage them, or give them the courage to take the next step.”
