Face of Hawaiian Airlines logo dies at 77, R.I.P Leina’ala Ann Teruya Drummond
Leina‘ala Ann Teruya Drummond entered the world on May 28, 1946, hailing from Puunene. In 1964, she claimed the title of Miss Hawaii and secured her place among the top 10 contestants in the Miss America Pageant that same year.
The Miss Hawaii Organization paid tribute to Drummond upon her passing, using social media to express their sorrow. In their post, they referred to her as they have “lost an icon, a legend and an absolutely beautiful soul.”
This Maui native also showcased her hula dancing talents in Danny Kaleikini’s show at the Kahala Hilton during the late 1960s. Additionally, she served as a member of the Maui County Council in the early 1990s.
Leina’ala Ann Teruya Drummond embarked on her career as a stewardess with Hawaiian Airlines at the tender age of 18. Shortly after joining the airline, she became the captivating face that inspired the airline’s now-famous logo, known as Pualani, a Hawaiian term signifying the “flower of the sky.”
Her distinctive side profile has graced the tails of Hawaiian Airlines’ aircraft since 1973, becoming an enduring symbol of the airline’s identity.
Tragically, Drummond lost her battle with cancer in Hilo, Hawaii, at the age of 77 on a Monday. Nevertheless, her spirit and grace continue to soar, carrying the spirit of Aloha across the globe.
