Delta celebrates 80 years in Miami with event honoring legacy, global partnerships and future growth

Celebration underscores Delta’s leadership in Miami, expanded global connectivity through partner airlines, and commitment to delivering a premium travel experience for customers.

Delta Air Lines marked a major milestone on Dec. 10 with a celebration in Miami honoring 80 years of service in South Florida. The event brought together customers, community partners, local leaders and Delta employees to reflect on the airline’s history and share its vision for the future.

“Miami has been part of Delta’s story for eight decades,” said Luciano Macagno, Delta’s managing director for Latin America, Caribbean and South Florida. “This celebration was about honoring that legacy while investing in what customers want: more flights, a bigger Sky Club and partner connections that make the world smaller for South Florida.”

From orange juice to global connections

Delta’s Miami journey began Dec. 1, 1945, with a Douglas DC-3 christened the city of Miami in true Florida fashion with orange juice instead of champagne. That inaugural flight connected Miami to Chicago on what was then the longest domestic route ever awarded, known as the “Trunkline to Sunshine.”
Today, Delta operates 38 peak-day departures to 13 destinations, including all nine U.S. hubs, and offers seamless access to more than 1,000 destinations in over 60 countries through its Global Partner Network.

This program combines Delta’s U.S. strength with its closest partners — LATAM, Aeroméxico, Air France-KLM, Virgin Atlantic and Korean Air — to give Miami travelers more destinations, better schedules and a consistent premium experience from curb to connection. Together, Delta and its partners connect customers with aligned schedules, benefits and service standards that feel “Delta,” even when flying on a partner airline.

Celebrating growth and premium travel

At the event, Delta highlighted its expanded presence in Miami, including a 27 percent increase in capacity compared to 2023 and the addition of daily service to Seattle. Delta also showcased its Miami Delta Sky Club, now 12,000 square feet with seating for 300 guests. The lounge features design inspired by Miami’s Art Deco architecture, enhanced buffet and beverage stations, and power outlets at nearly every seat. Premium touches in the Delta One cabin like José Andrés menus, Missoni amenity kits and Taittinger Champagne reinforce Delta’s commitment to an elevated travel experience.

Commitment to community

Giving back has been core to Delta’s culture for 100 years. In South Florida, Delta supports organizations addressing our focus areas of education, environment, equity and entire wellness through partnerships with Junior Achievement of Greater Miami and South Florida, YMCA of South Florida, Clean Miami Beach, Miami Beach Pride and coastline restoration with MANG. Delta has also been named to Points of Light’s Civic 50 list, recognizing the most community-minded companies, in the U.S. for eight consecutive years.

For many employees, the celebration was a moment to reflect on Delta’s impact.

“One of the moments that filled me with immense pride was during the global pandemic when Delta introduced ‘Flying with Purpose’ to support frontline healthcare workers,” said Eric Fleming, Miami Sky Club lead with 28 years of service. “It showed our commitment to the community in times of need.”

Frank Aguerrebere, a Sky Club Ambassador with 38 years at Delta, added, “Coming from a long line of family members who worked for Delta, I feel a deep sense of pride. As the longest-serving airline in Miami, Delta represents stability, commitment and community.”
