Food untouched by passengers flying first class is coming off flights and being transported to those less fortunate in Brisbane, as part of a charity initiative to reduce food waste.
OzHarvest Brisbane is a charity that brings unopened snacks and first-class meals to hungry Australians. Its method involves meeting airplanes at the Brisbane airport to collect safe and untouched food items.
The company then repurposes that food, donating it to more than 200 charities in the area. Since its founding in 2004, OzHarvest has reclaimed roughly 400 to 900 pounds of food each day.
The food charity was founded in 2004 and rescues quality excess food from commercial outlets across the country for delivery, direct and free of charge, to more than 200 charities. Up to 400kg of plane food saved each day.
The charity has been collecting between 200 and 400 kilograms each day within the Brisbane Airport precinct and within two hours it will be delivered to a charity for the homeless or the needy.
Within two hours of us picking up the food, it’s then delivered to a charity for the homeless or someone doing it tough.
To help airlines work at cutting down their food waste, OzHarvest tracked the food saved from the airlines including quantities, types and on what dates.
Future aims of OzHarvest Brisbane include collecting hot meals from airline kitchens and teaming up with airport terminal food vendors.
THEIR MISSION IS TO NOURISH AUSTRALIA
OzHarvest has four pillars that direct the work that they do:
They are on a mission to eliminate hunger and food waste through the redistribution of quality surplus food. Likewise, to provide a framework for food rescue that can be replicated.
Educating and raising awareness about food waste, food rescue, food security and sustainability is central to our vision. Protecting and improving the environment through all our actions matters deeply to us. Promoting nutrition education is paramount. Providing hospitality training and mentoring for disadvantaged youth drives us onwards and upwards, together.
Embracing community support for OzHarvest lies at the heart of our purpose. They offer a range of opportunities for the community to engage with our family. In turn, the goodness spreads through our family, adding purpose to peoples’ lives through meaningful action.
Innovation is at the heart of what they do. Whether its finding new ways and solutions to combat food waste and hunger, to using technology to mobilise everyday Australians to take meaningful action. We pride ourselves on having created a unique for-impact, food rescue model which is being implemented and adapted across the globe.
