When you’re the world’s most awarded airline, it’s hard not to have avid aviation fans coming onboard. Singapore Airlines Inflight Magazine Silverkris had a chat with SIA superfan Beng Keat (BK) Tan, for whom Singapore Airlines is a great way not only to fly, but also to live.
Since 2008, the aviation geek – a compliance risk manager in the aviation industry (pictured with his nieces) – has compiled statistics on the flights he has taken. Of the 339 trips (and counting) Tan has been on, 75.9 per cent have taken place on Singapore Airlines or its subsidiary, SilkAir. He also has the uncanny ability to tell you the type of aircraft operated if you supply him with your flight number and destination.
Although Tan never made it past the finals of Singapore Airlines’ Cadet Pilot Programme, his pride in his national carrier is “of epic proportions”. He faithfully attends events held by the Airline and often writes in to compliment the crew’s “professional yet personalised service”.
Tan has devoted much of his home and office space to showcasing his collection of memorabilia from Singapore Airlines, right down to boarding passes and meal menus. His prized possessions are 200 SIA and SilkAir plane models ranging from nostalgic to current designs, including an Airbus A380 custom-made to a 1:100 scale. “This intense passion borders on obsession,” he admits.
