The wind beneath your wings – Air New Zealand’s guide on California’s role in helping modern aviation take flight
Though Los Angeles might be best known for the stars on the streets, there’s just as much history with the ones in the sky. California, and particularly Los Angeles is recognised as a hub for much of American culture, and with its clear skies and reliable weather, has helped propel modern aviation forward, commercially and militarily, as well as in aerospace.
From the world’s first flight school to building the rockets which put the first man on the moon, California has helped in opening the world up (and even the out-of-this-world, thanks to Elon Musk and other space aficionados) to us all. We look at some of the notable events, companies, and people from California whose technological innovations helped shaped air travel as we know it today.
