Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) shooting: 5 dead and several wounded, suspect had gun in bag

Five people were shot dead and eight wounded in Terminal 2 at a baggage claim area at Fort Lauderdale’s airport. Law enforcement sources says the suspect, identified as Esteban Santiago, had brought the firearm in his checked luggage. The incident happen at approximately 1 pm.

Authorities said it was too early to understand why the suspect, who was taken into custody without incident, opened fire at the Florida airport.

Broward County has established a toll-free number for passengers and family members affected by this afternoon’s incident at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

According to Broward Sheriff’s Office, the suspected gunman is in custody.

The Airport has suspended all operations until further notice. Port Everglades is closed to inbound land traffic until further notice. Passengers are asked to call their airline or cruise line for latest information.

A Family Assistance Center has been established at the Renaissance Hotel, 1617 SE 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33316. The telephone number of the hotel is 954-626-1700.

Friends and family can call the Broward County Call Center, toll free, at 866-435-9355, for the latest information. The Call Center will be open for extended hours today and until further notice.

A media staging area has been established between Terminal 1 and 2 of the Airport, on the upper level. The Broward Emergency Operation Center is at a Level 2 (partial) activation to coordinate any additional resources in support of the incident.
